Our Verdict

Montane’s Womens Phoenix Insulated Jacket is filled with Thermoplume from Primaloft, which is a Insulation Type that is ‘loose fill’ in the same way that down is ‘loose fill’ and so the jacket is made up of compartments that are filled with the insulation rather than a more traditional synthetic offering where the insulation comes as a mat. This means there are a lot of stitch lines that are required to create the baffles. This results in a jacket with a better drape and less stiff with movement.

The Thermoplume insulation is claimed to be as warm as 550 Fill Power down, and with 130grams of it its roughly equivalent to a the Montane Featherlite Jacket in Fill but it will not be quite as warm as the down in the Featherlite is 750 Fill Power. The Featherlite is about a 130 grams light as well, which reflects the fabrics used in in its construction.

If you expect to be in wet conditions this will be a better choice over the equivalent down jacket, its also significantly cheaper.

The hood is quite simple with an elasticated band round the face, the wrists are finished in the same manner. We really like the narrow baffle detailing at the sides. There’s an internal chest pocket and a nice internal baffle behind the zip which will keep out the worst of the weather.
