Our Verdict

Montane’s Super Terra Pants are made from extremely tough fabric with further Cordura reinforcement in key places. The high water resistance of the fabric singles them out as a softshell and we think they make an ideal winter trekking pant. Many winter pants have some form of insulation or brushed inner face for warmth, the Super Terra Pants don’t, the fabric has a canvas feel to it and the real story is durability and toughness rather than insulation.

The fabric also has a fair bit of stretch, which makes them comfortable to wear. There are also a range of pockets comprising one at the back, two hand warmer pockets at the front and two further patch pockets on the legs – all are zipped.

There are zipped vents at knee height and further zips at the ankle to facilitate easy on and off over walking shoes. Overall they are quite heavy which reflects the heavier material, copious pockets, zips and reinforcement areas. Buy these if you want a super tough heavyweight pair of trekking pants that will cope with your worst nightmare, but which still have enough stretch in the fabric to make them feel comfortable.
