Our Verdict

Montane’s Fireball Insulated Jacket has been around in one form or another for a long time and is one of our favourite pieces, it provides an unexpectedly high degree of insulation for a relatively low weight. The latest version is made from stretch fabric and stretch insulation so it feels really comfortable when being worn as a Winter mid-layer or Spring/Autumn outer layer.

Being synthetic it’s insulating value is not compromised by dampness and so its an ideal piece for pulling on during the day if conditions are worsening and getting colder or windier. Older models of the Fireball Jacket suffered a little because the insulation wasn’t breathable, you could get sweat building up when you were working hard – this latest version uses a breathable insulation so I’m really looking forward to trying this out. In the Summer I’d even take it as my ‘around camp’ insulation.

Quality of construction is exceptional as you would expect from Montane, the cuffs are just lightly elasticated and the hood has a simple round the face finish with no adjustment. The hem has a drawcord. It’s designed as a superefficient no-nonesense insulation piece.
